DIY Decorating: Lumber + test tubes = ???

What do you get when you combine a 4x6 piece of lumber, test tubes, ribbon, cardboard and tulips? Nothing but a decorative Down Home DIY spring vase, of course! A fun DIY decorating idea for Spring.

I was inspired by a beautiful and "Totally Tubular" creation by fellow Junker, Candy, at Junk Sophisticate. Candy is a very talented and creative designer. She has a knack for re-purposing items into stunning displays. I loved her floral vase but didn't have access to a Sugar Mold or cigar tubes so I decided to make my own version.

Sugar molds are expensive (can be over $100+) so I opted to buy a piece of wood for $6.00 and was able to make 12 vases from it!

I went to the lumberyard and had Home Depot cut the wood into twelve 9" pieces for me. I ordered test tubes off of eBay since I couldn't find cigar tubes.

I used an electric sander to smooth out the rough wood. (p.s. I really dislike sanding!)

I got my drill bit and drilled 4 holes in each block. I highly recommend using a vice grip. I did not have one and, as a result, I now have a big ole bruise on my hip bone. (Ouch, that'll leave a mark!)

I had the cardboard and ribbon on hand since I use it to pack and ship my personalized stationery. I used a dark wood gel stain and wax to finish the blocks.

Add some water and fresh tulips and voila, my own version of a unique fresh way to display spring flowers.

Thank you Candy for the inspiration!

The completed projected was proudly displayed at each featured home in the The Tour of Fine Kitchen event this weekend in Winston Salem, NC.
